I'm delighted that Connelly's Portrait of a Priestess has been named. There was quite a stir in the letter columns of the TLS after James (Courtesans & Fishcakes) Davidson's patronizing review of this book in October.

The letter I liked best began: "Sir, Your magnificent review of Joan Breton Connelly's magisterial Portrait of a Priestess was as entertaining as it was mistitled ["Women of Ancient Athens"]; the reviewer clearly worships at a different altar."
